Formerly the French ex Plague Hospital St. Roch founded 1831, in 1845 became the orphanage for poor Christians, known as ‘piçhane’. In republican times it was Izmir’s Sanitation Institution and Department of Public Health, the building was restored between the years of 1985-1988 by the Ministry of Culture and arranged as the local Ethnography Museum. The style of the construction suggests the building has been altered over time, possibly rebuilt - it may have been built ca. 1910 as part of the Imperial Ottoman Hospital complex nearby, possibly as an Institute of Hygiene. The building still function as such at the base of Varyant near Konak square. Below archive views of the area.
