Indian troops captured at Kut photographed immediately after an exchange of prisoners. The Ottoman Empire was poorly suited to provisioning its own troops at this stage, let alone captured prisoners, as these cases of malnutrition clearly show. The beleaguered garrison of Kut had finally surrendered to the Turks on 29 April 1916, and its fall was a humiliating defeat.
