John Borthwick Paterson, was the son of Robert Paterson of Leith, Scotland. It appears that upstream from him mythology and genealogy confuse matters. It appears they had whalers and other ships, premises on the waterfront at the port of Leith and were relatively wealthy (large house children well educated etc). He was one of the founders of the Commercial Bank of Scotland holding 1% at his death. He had three sons (to my knowledge) Robert (a doctor), David a corn merchant and John who went to Athens initially writing a celebrated paper on the character of the Athenian. I only know that it is celebrated and have never seen a copy as Edinburgh High School lists him as one of its famous alumni.

When I went through the files of the ambassador Bulwer Lytton at the Norwich archives it revealed letters to Routh consul in Constantinople showing that JB Paterson’s interests were being looked after by the ambassador. He is fairly disparaging about the fairness of the Grand Vizier with who he was discussing the chromium mines and the restrictions on export. - Information and photos courtesy of Martin Jennings.
