The former Greek Orthodox church and school of Agios Ioannes o Theologos (Saint John the Theologian) that was in the Kemeraltı district and some of its relict ruins apparently are still visible accoring to Hakan Kazım Taşkıran author of the recent book: ‘Kemeraltı’nın Izmiri’. In February 2009 Andrew Simes scouted the area and found surprising amount of relict of this building that survived the 1922 events due to its location outside the fire zone, as show below.

The inscription above the doorway, which loosely translated reads: ‘Bell tower constructed from the foundations with the donations of the Orthodox for the beautification of the church dedicated to John the Theologian in the year of Our Lord 1859 August 7’. The photographs of the arcaded area are difficult to interpret, it could either be the porch of the church itself or the porch of another building which formed part of the church complex - analysis courtesy of George Vassiadis, 2009.
